Erklärbare Buli-Namen / Buli names and their explanations


Vorbemerkung: Alle Namen von Personen beginnen in Buli, der Sprache der Bulsa, mit A-. Falls nicht anders vermerkt (w= Mädchenname), können die Namen männlichen und weiblichen Kindern gegeben werden. Namen mit den Endungen -lie oder -pok sind immer weiblich. Hinweise über Namengebung, Typen und Funktionen von Namen usw. finden sich in:

Die Zweisprachigkeit der folgenden Liste erklärt sich aus der Kombination verschiedener Quellen (englische Erklärungen der Informanten sollten erhalten bleiben). Das Subjekt des Namens wurde oft mit Hilfe eines Bulsa-Informanten ergänzt.


Abaadaanimi: They disturb me.

Abaadek: they themselves; Kind sah aus wie Ahne

Abaajiak: They are tired.

Abaakaasi: They spoil.

Abaakarim: They read (people try to study other characters)

Abaakisi. They hate (me).

Abaalaba: They laugh at them.

Abaalie (w): daughter of all of them (Frau kam schwanger zu neuem Gatten)

Abaaluk: They separate themselves (stellen sich selbst ins Abseits).

Abaanariba: They wash them (themselves?)

Abaavariba: They collect them (vor Geburt war im Haus eingebrochen worden)

Ababeniba: Sie bleiben bei sich.

Ababie: They are bad (to me).

Abachoba: Sie drängen sie [zum Streit]

Abade: they eat; let them eat

Abadeksanoa: their own mouths (wasimmer sie sagen, es ist ihre persönliche Meinung)

Abaglie: daughter of a horn, was dedicated to a horn-shrine (bage)

Abalami: (They) laugh at me.

Abalika: next year is not there (das Kind wird das nächste Jahr nich erleben)

Abalume: They go here or there.

Abanawie: words (wie) or quarrel about a boundary (bana)

Abang: lizard; Baby war klein wie eine Eidechse

Abangdisapo: wann vergessen?

Abangmaami: Sie tadeln mich.

Abasilie: (girl) named after the Basiik-river near Doninga

Abatanurkase: How do they have (care for, handle) a person? Mutter kümmert sich nicht um ihre Tochter.

Abavelum: They tell lies.

Abawomba: Sie hören auf sie (Mit Absicht werden genauere Angaben vermieden).

Abayiak: they drive away

Abayoming: sadness

Abayuen: they talk (say)

Abazuakame: They are really many! Er ist mit der Anzahl seiner Kinder zufrieden

Abejam: lost and came (Vater kam unversehrt aus dem Weltkrieg zurück)

Abelmi: (You) will die (get lost) with me.

Abenibadek: bleiben bei sich selbst

Abetibala: (If) he gets lost (dies) they will laugh (Anspielung auf Feinde des Namensgebers).

Abiako: give birth to 100 children (name given in the wars against Babatu)

Abiakum: den Tod gebären (bisher nur Todgeburten)

Abiatekum: (They) gave birth for death (all children died).

Abilingjo: to roll inside (a sign of sorrow or joy)

Abisama: mother of children

Abokakiritinleboa: What is the aim (reason, sense) of life?

Abolimjumi: Fire has burnt me (im Krieg legte der Feind Feuer, um sie aus den Verstecken zu holen)

Abolisi: to prune, to defoliate

Abora: living - He survived after several miscarriages

Aborisa: sowing; born in the sowing-season

Abowen: God exists

Abuki: book; z.B. für die Schule geboren; oder z.Z. der Geburt gab es ein Problem mit der staatlichen Verwaltung

Abuntalie (w): Tochter eines Steins; gemeint ist das Erdheiligtum Pung Muning (segi des Kindes)

Aburinya: Weihnachten (Twi); das Kind wurde zu Weihnachten geboren.

Abusumbuonglie (w): busumboong-tree [Pileostigma thonningii?]; Mutter gebar unter diesem Baum

Abuteumboka: Greed is there (exists).

Achaandak: to turn and show

Achagsiyigri: rattle and catch: Wir sind wie Hühner, die man durch Rasseln anlockt, um sie dann zu fangen

Achalikoansa: fear disgrace

Achalikoba: fear fathers (oder:) run to kill them

Achampok: woman of the sheatree

Achamsi: to try or test

Achana: stranger; name of a baby before it gets an official name (cf. Asampana)

Acharimi: share with me

Achariwan: with whom shall I share? Da sind so viele Personen, dass er nicht verteilen kann.

Achenya: cut and see; Gerede hilft nichts; tue (schneide) etwas und sieh (nya), wie es geworden ist.

Achieknaam: to seize kingship (chieftaincy; wealth)

Achimbe: Where to grow? Wo werden seine Kinder nach seinem Tod aufwachsen?

Achimboa: become what? Was wird aus mir werden?

Achingmailie (w): daughter of the rain (wurde an regnerischem Tag geboren)

Achinwan: to become who? Man kann nicht über sich selbst hinaus.

Achipagrik: strong soul; Tochter wurde 1 Jahr nach ihrer älteren Schwester geboren; man erwartete, dass sie starb, sie muss starke Seele haben

Achiviepo: in Scham

Achuemi: annoy me; verärgern indem man z.B. etwas zeigt und dann doch nicht gibt

Achumka: There is no tomorrow. Es gibt keine Zukunft (für das Kind).

Achumleyok: Tomorrow will be cool. Die Zukunft kann nur besser sein.

Achumniyaai: You (pl.) will need me tomorrow.

Adaabanyono: [he is] not their owner (Streit um Eigentum oder Vaterschaft)

Adaabilinsa: Mutter wurde schwanger von Bilinsa-Leuten gekidnappt (daa = ist nicht); Kind hat sicherlich keinen Bilinsa Vater.

Adaakisuk: It is not a taboo (not forbidden).

Adaaminyini: not I alone; auch andere haben ihre Probleme

Adaanlie (w): Tochter des Hirsebiers

Adaanur: 1. Deutung: A. daa nur: A’s Kind ist kein Mensch

Adaanur: 2. Deutung: A daa nur le nye ba: Keiner (außer Gott) machte ihn (wörtl. sie)

Adaanur: 3. Deutung: A dan kan daa nur... If it is not a man...

Adaasi: push

Adaayauk: (he is) not an elephant (zu viele muten ihm zu viel zu)

Adajavuuk: not a living being - Er wird nicht mehr lange leben.

Adalong: im Dalong (Ahnenhaus) geboren

Adangbong: to spread (e.g. leaves or grains) on the flat roof (for drying)

Adeakase: eats for nothing

Adeboalie (w): was essen?

Adekabula: eat that one; bula kann sich nur auf Nomen der bu-Klasse beziehen, das "gegessen werden kann", z.B.: saab (T.Z.), tiim (Medizin)

Adekatoa: eating is difficult

Adigi: to be silent; nicht auf Angriffe und Anschuldigungen reagieren

Adiilie (w): Tochter des Zweifels

Adiivum: meet life by surprise

Adilieboa (w): What will I get from a daughter? Geschenke der Freier wiegen Sohn nicht auf.

Adoalikum: friend of death: Viele Kinder waren vorher gestorben, er ist jetzt mit Tod befreundet.

Adogpo: in the room, Frau gebar im Raum, nicht draußen

Adungkalie (w): Tochter des Tiers

Adunkame: to press, suppress; to keep patient, silent

Adunkpak: old hatred

Aduwelingbisa: children of the mighty one (stool name of the former chief Ayieta)

Afaalatie: not minding us; soll sich um eigene Dinge kümmern;

Afelbiik: white man’s child; Eltern wissen, dass sie das Kind an die Weißen (Südghana) abgeben müssen

Afelik (Afelie): white man; born when white people came to Bulsa; or: looks or behaves like a white man

Afoblikame: complain, to be dissatisfied

Afoko: slap and kill

Afokobisakantigisi: Afokos Kinder sind nicht vereint (sie streiten immer untereinander)

Aforisidu: to go away from there

Afulang: Fulaani; z.B. Begegnung mit Fulani-Hirten z.Z. der Geburt

Agaam: better; alle armen Leute sind besser dran als er

Agaasa: wicked

Agalic: leftee

Agambiak: Gambaga (town)

Agandiok: strong person, Baby war sehr stark

Agatuesi: go and collect

Agayiak: go and drive away

Agazeri: they go to refuse

Agbaruk: lame; Kind lernte schlecht laufen

Agbelimi: tantalize (z.B.. Gegebenes wieder abnehmen)

Agilimbaninapo: roam about in their eyes. (gilim auch: to surround, to be enclosed)

Agilinko: surround and kill; wenn jd. eingekreist ist, kann man ihn leicht töten

Aginganagokbaliisi: Die Trommeln (gingana) spielen zum Tanz (gok < gogi), aber sie wollen nicht (tanzen).

Agoabe: Where (do you) go?

Agoabe: Wo schlafe ich?

Agoalie (w): Tochter des Busches

Agoalisui: (They) sleep with anger.

Agominapok: gomina < engl. governor; Mädchen (pok= Frau) wurde beim Besuch des Gouverneurs geboren

Agoom: sleep; als Kind geboren wurde, war alles am schlafen

Agooranaab: chief of kola-nuts; Haussa kamen bei seiner Geburt; Junge hat Haussa-Stammesnarben

Aguliwie: to vomit out problems (or words)

Aguulie (w): daughter of ruins; Gehöft wurde im Krieg zerstört; als das Mädchen geboren wurde war er wieder ganz.

Aguuta: ruins; our compound will become ruins

Ajaabkinla: something useless

Ajadoklie: daughter of the jadok-spirit (male name *Ajadok not common)

Ajambobapo: Come and stay with them: Nach Tod der Mutter soll Junge bei Großeltern aufwachsen.

Ajamko: come and kill

Ajamkolim: come and collect; Sie sollen Dinge nach der Haushaltsauflösung abholen.

Ajamzaan: came and stayed: nach vielen Fehlgeburten überlebt dieses Kind; Name in solchen Fälle üblich

Ajapisim: a worthless (picked) thing: Sein Vater war der jüngste unter den Geschwistern und wird wohl nichts erben

Ajiak: tired; er ist alles leid

Ajiirim: mercy, kindness

Ajikum: (You) carry death on your head; Er ist dir immer nahe.

Ajindem: today’s people; die junge Generation

Ajogileeta: lit. to fail insults (insults have no effect)

Ajokpilung: das Totenreich betreten

Ajowiepo: in Schwierigkeiten eintreten

Ajoyeagapo: they entered too much: Sie sind zu stark in diese Angelegenheit eingestiegen.

Ajozaanbe: Where (can I) enter and stand? (There is no place for me)

Ajue: climb: Was immer man tut, der guter Name (des Kindes) wird emporsteigen.

Ajuebek: to climb and ask

Ajuewen: climb to God: Kann man zu Gott im Himmel hinaufklettern?

Ajuiche: climb and cut: Ich bin so groß, dass man an mir heraufklettern muss, um mich zu töten.

Ajuik, Ajuidiok, Ajuibil, Ajuite (male), Ajuiklie or Ajuipok (female): named after the mongoose-shrine (juik);

Ajuikperik: wonderful mongoose: nachdem das Kind vorher einen falschen Namen bekommen hatte

Ajuimoaning: red juik, nach juik-Schrein benannt, Kind hat helle Hautfarbe Ajuibil, Ajuidiok, Ajuite,

Ajuiside: begging for eating; will zeigen, dass er sehr arm ist

Ajuisigoom: begging for sleep

Ajuisobluk: dark juik; nach juik-Schrein benannt, Kind hat dunkle Hautfarbe

Ajuisiwen: begging God

Ajuviok: Wind weht

Akaabteba: sacrifice for them

Akaada: don’t buy/sell children; Man kann Kinder nicht kaufen.

Akaasinaab: offend a chief

Akabaasim: keine Gesundheit/Wohlergehen

Akabanoe: (I) have not got their mouths. (Er) hat keine Kontrolle über das Gerede der Nachbarn.

Akabawai: habe keinen von ihnen

Akabawiepo: I am not included in your (neighbours’) troubles: Vater wurde von Nachbarn gehasst.

Akaboka: no life; He has no means for life, Life is meaningless.

Akaboka: has no living

Akachaaliba: (I do) not fear them.

Akachaliba: does not fear them

Akachum: (He) has not tomorrow/future.

Akagura: no one to bury; Hexen haben die meisten seiner Kinder getötet; er hat keinen mehr, den er beerdigen kann

Akajiirim: keine Sympathie, Gnade, Mitleid

Akakpiengkum: not older than death: Tod hat immer die größte Macht.

Akalbe: Where will (I) sit? Er muss laufend herumziehen, um Streit in Familie zu schlichten, oder: er hat viele Besucher

Akaliwom: sit down and listen: Er will ihre Reaktionen abwarten.

Akamaanyabisa: does not help to get children

Akaminyeka: not like my doing

Akanbalieta: will not forget their abuse

Akanbang: not forget; er wird nie vergessen, was man ihm angetan hat

Akanbangleeta: (I do) not forget insults.

Akanbeglie (w): "not ask-daughter"; was immer man ihm antut, er wird keine Fragen stellen

Akanbek: not ask: Wenn man Fragen stellt, kann ein Konflikt noch verschärft werden.

Akanbeliba: I do not get lost with them

Akanbiaba: (can) not give birth to them

Akanbiisatemi: not talk for me: Andere können für das neugeborene Mädchen nicht sprechen.

Akanbiisilewen: (can) not speak with God

Akanboaniba: (I do) not tear them into pieces

Akanbobayik: cannot tie and catch; kann (etwas) nicht festhalten

Akanbolukum: ist nicht beim Tod

Akanbong, Akanbongnaab: Ashanti (chief);

Akanboro: not present, not alive

Akanbul(i): no source of water (well): Seine Familie bringt keine Kinder mehr hervor.

Akanchaalata: not mind laughter: Gelächter der anderen macht ihm nichts aus.

Akanchalabe: does not run and get lost

Akancheesiba: (I) do not despise them

Akanchepung: (we) do not cut a rock (ein Starker kann nicht besiegt werden)

Akanchiimanyoro: do not count and include: Ich werde nicht zu den menschlichen Wesen gerechnet

Akandabisa: do not buy children

Akandakum: not buy death: Der Tod kommt ganz allein ohne dass er gerufen oder gekauft wird.

Akandalinkum: does not take long to die (death): Bis zum Tode ist es nur eine kurze Zeit.

Akandari: not buy/sell: Probleme kauft man nicht, sie kommen von selbst.

Akandawen: Gott kann man nicht kaufen.

Akandayue: not buy name: Einen guten Namen (Ansehen) kann man nicht kaufen.

Akande: not eat: Er wird seinen Sohn niemals an eine andere Familie abgeben.

Akandeba: cannot take (eat) them: Er darf eine Frau aus einem bestimmten Clan nicht heiraten.

Akandemaana: They do not eat sorrow: Da er Sorgen nicht essen kann, muss er sie anderen erzählen (maana= talking sorrowfully)

Akandewen: you cannto buy luck/ heaven/ God

Akanfebanyueta: cannot force their intestines; man kann sie nicht zwingen (etwas zu tun)

Akanfelik: not white; Kind hatte helle Haut (Albino)

Akanfewon: not force God

Akangaaba: will not separate them (z.B. bei Streit auseinanderreißen)

Akangaamkum: nobody can surpass death (or: can escape from death)

Akangir(i): do not argue: Ich bin zufrieden mit dem, was man mir gibt.

Akangiri: I do not imitate (other people).

Akangmanjamloansi: Do not come and throw (it) down again.

Akangriba: do not rely on them, do not argue with them (gri: rely on another person to do sth.)

Akangumbapo: will not mix with them

Akangutiba: they do not exhume him (take him out of the grave)

Akaniaba: I don’t relieve them (niagi: bless, relieve)

Akanjagnaab: Chief of Kanjaga: Mutter kommt aus Kanjaga oder das Kind wurde dort geboren

Akanje: I would not wrestle. I would not refuse (e.g. food).

Akanjeleba: He can’t fight them (je= to wrestle).

Akanjelikum: (I) do not wrestle with death

Akanjoba: does not enter them. He cannot stay or live with them.

Akanjoglieta: (I) do not miss insults. Er wird immer beleidigt.

Akanjogyue: don’t miss a name: Er ist überall respektiert und hat einen guten Ruf.

Akanjolenur: does not enter with a person: er hasst Leute, die bei ihm wohnen

Akanjoyue: I do not miss a (good) name.

Akanjuisiba: is not begging them: Selbst wenn er vor Hunger stirbt, wird er nichts von ihnen erbetteln.

Akankalibe: "nicht - sitzen - verlorengehen": So lange wir bei den Göttern sitzen, können wir nicht verloren gehen

Akankoalingba: (I) do not collect (here: possess) them

Akankomi: can’t kill me

Akankpabinaam: does not hasten to [acquire] chieftaincy (wealth)

Akankpienwen: not older than God

Akankuriwai: I will not pound anyone

Akanlaba: don’t laugh at them

Akanlakum: They don’t laugh at death.

Akanligmi: schließ mich nicht ab (aus)

Akanlugba: does not separate them: There is no difference between them.

Akanlugsiwen: not claim (take) luck back

Akanluk: not discriminate

Akanmaami: hilft mir nicht

Akanmingkum: not know death: He does not know when death will come.

Akanminiba: I do not refuse them. (or:) I do not hide anything from them.

Akanmoatiba: (do/does) not approach them

Akanmob: you cannot open [the heart]

Akanmugsimi: not force me, not put pressure on me

Akannagyedri: not bring the downfall of a house

Akannariba: (I) do not wash them

Akanneesiba: does not resemble them: Du kannst nie so werden wie die Reichen.

Akanngmaayienti: (They do) not rush again.

Akanngmanbapo: I do not go back to them.

Akanniaba: not make them better, not reconcile them

Akanpaanaab: does not reach a chief: Konkurrent verdient Häuptlingstum nicht.

Akanpaariba: not reach them

Akanpagisi: not deny

Akanpaanaab: does not reach (=deserve) a (title of a) chief (member of chief's family)

Akanpateng: not take land

Akanpatulsi: (I) do not reach a human being (deep Buli).

Akanpekba: will not keep them from doing what they want (pek; pigi= to keep)

Akanpekum: (No one can) avoid death (pe= to swear).

Akanperiba: cannot keep (detain) them

Akanpienti: not reveal secret: Nobody will know my secret.

Akanpisiba: not increase them

Akanpitibiam: not reveal the secret of death (pinti= to reveal)

Akanpolidi: not think like that

Akanpotikum: do not summon death

Akanpuulim: do not boast

Akansagchaaba: do not teach each other

Akansagmiyam: does not show me sense

Akansagnaab: nobody teaches a chief

Akansalimba: do not beg them

Akansalinkum: do not beg (invite) death

Akansang: verfolgt nicht

Akansiaba: does not agree with them

Akansibaleeta: not agree with their insults

Akansiing: frog (Kind war klein wie ein Frosch)

Akansuak: (Ayieta’s children) never fade.

Akansuba: (do/does) not hide them

Akansudum: put badness into it

Akansuenisa: not fill hands (not willing to give alms)

Akansuetitok: does not fill throat

Akansugala: not put in left hand; ein Geschenk sollte man nicht aufzwingen (?)

Akantagriwen: do not change God

Akantagriwena: cannot change luck / God: Dem Schicksal entkommt man nicht.

Akantewonjiam: not give thanks to heaven: Sie wollen Gott nicht danken.

Akantigsi: do not gather

Akantogidaam: Do not talk about the past.

Akantomsi: (I do) not imitate

Akantugiba: (I) do not end (with?) them. (tugi auch: to aim at, to stretch out...)

Akantulimba: I do not turn them upside down

Akantuyue: cannot destroy a (good) name

Akanuetiim: do not finish (here: waste) medicine

Akanvaribiam: They do not seize a birth. Einen Menschen kann man jemandem nicht wegnehmen.

Akanvariyer: I do not seize a house.

Akanviilim: (It) is not too much.

Akanwaang: (I do) not desperse or spread

Akanwaringaang: not stay at the back (behind)

Akanwarisagi: not stay in the bush

Akanwariwen: not force God (vari= to collect with force)

Akanyaabachoa: do like each other

Akanyaabiyong: (I) don’t want any more talk (Seine Frau wurde als Hexe angeschluldigt)

Akanyaajoka: not want to enter (into troubles, discussions...)

Akanyaaminyaka: wünscht nicht meinen Anblick

Akanyaanalim: not want beauty/ goodness

Akanyaayega: liebt nicht viele

Akanyakpilima: not like/love the ancestors

Akanyanaab: does not like/want a chief

Akanyawai: not like anybody: (ironisch: Dies behaupten Leute von ihm)

Akanyawie: does not like words: Er ist das Gerede oder die Diskussionen um etwas leid.

Akanyimayoro: does not count for me: Bei mir gilt er als nichts (he does not like a certain wonderful person).

Akanyisikum: not beg death: Tod kommt von selbst.

Akanyitiyie: (I do) not quit houses

Akanyono: I have no parents.

Akanzabi: be contented

Akanzabwai: verachtet keinen

Akanzeri: not refuse: Ich weise nicht zurück was Gott mir gibt.

Akanzeribiom: not refuse evil (auch das Übel muss man akzeptieren)

Akanzeriwen: will not refuse God: Er nimmt an, was immer Gott ihm gibt.

Akanzulichaab: (They do) not respect each other.

Akapong: porridge (kapong); oder: kein (ka) Albino (pong)

Akasetechaab: has not build (a house) for others

Akasiatechaab: does not agree with others

Akasilik: lizard: Kind ist klein wie eine Eidechse.

Akasining: destroy before: Jemand hat eine Angelegenheit schon vorher verdorben.

Akasoma: I have no relatives or friends.

Akasuleba: has no feeling for them; does not mind them

Akatiak: calabash bowl

Akatuaknure: man of "vinegar"= brave person

Akawuruk: kleiner Tontopf oder Taube; bezieht sich auf die Körperform

Akayaabisa: liebt keine Kinder (ironisch)

Akayalaata: does not like laughter

Akayam: no sense/reason; z.B.: jüngere Generation hat keinen Verstand

Akayeri: has no house

Akayue: no name; he has lost all his former importance. whatever he does, there is no gain

Akazawen: go and stand

Akazuik: has no hair; has no respect for human beings

Akeri: squirrel

Akingkauk: millet leaf

Akinla: nothing, in vain

Akisiba: hate them

Akisibadek: (They) hate themselves.

Akisichaab: hate each other

Akisikame: really hating; sb. hates me

Akisimideka: they hate my eating

Akisipak: old hatred

Akoalimalie: daughter of bottles

Akoalingsang: collect (your possessions) and follow

Akoanoa: deformed person, fool

Akoansa: behaviour of a fool or deformed person;

Akoansa: foolishness

Akoasisi: death does not cease killing: Kind wurde geboren, als jemand gestorben war.

Akobadek: kill themselves

Akobayer: kill their house

Akobisa: relatives

Akochaab: kill each other

Akokbil: small ghost

Akolinaab: chief of Koligu (bei Navrongo)

Akolintebai: pack and give sb.: Wenn man keine Kinder hat, wird das Erbe an irgendjemand vergeben;

Akomilie (w): daughter of hunger (geboren in einer Hungerszeit); oder: daughter of Kom (village)

Akomtoa: crying is difficult

Akonaab: kill a chief

Akopieleba: kill people who speak truth: Man tötet aufrichtige Menschen.

Akotinnvuusi: Kill and I will rest. (Nach dem Mord werde ich meine Ruhe haben)
