19.6.1931, The Chief seems to be an excellent chap - with some common sense and the command of his people.

20.3.1940, ...I arrived at Seniessi to spend a night there. The Chief amazed me by his desire to talk. He enjoyed exceedingly his excursion to Mines and sea and very few things seem to have escaped him. Unlike the Mayoronaba he would have liked to have stayed a long time in the ships Cold-Room, he said all his travel had made him so hot that some real cold was delightful.

WIESI

CHIEFS (N.A.G.)

Aiyerawe (father of Apasube)

Apasube, ca. 1892- (died 1925)

Anankwen: 17.11.1925 - 20.12.1933 (Regent: Akamba)

Abolimpo / Abotempo: 16.2.1935 - 1937 (death)

(stool vacant for 15 months, regent: Abuntura)

Abuntore / Abunturu: 22.7.1939

26.6.1906, Chief’s name Apasube. no flag, no locket, He has been chief of Wiasi for about 14 years, he is a son of Aiyerawe, who was the last chief and who died a long time ago. Apasube is in affluent circumstances, powerful, and has control over his people. He is not paramount over any other town.

8.3.1917, Wiase Chief: Apasube

12.1.1917, Chief has no complaints and produced no recruits. His excuse was that he never saw any of his people unless the White Man came along. I was here in December and saw him at Fambisi in January, he promised to try and get me some men there. I told him I should be very disappointed if he did not do so.

26.1.1917, The chief, Apasube, was this day presented with one of the new small medallions at Fumbisi, in the presence of the Chiefs of Sandema, Fambisi and Doninga.

Jan. 1925, Apasube the Chief died.

9.6.1925 Chief reports funeral custom of later Chief funeral

17.11.1925, Visited election held for new Chief. Two contestants: Anankwen, a son of the late chief who polled 255; Abotempo, a ... child of the late chief: 81

Anankwen was ... elected.

12.11.1926? During the middle of October 1926, the chief of Aiasse [Wiesi] reported at Navrongo to the ag. C.N.P. (Col. Whittall) that people wanted to cross the Sisili river and settle under the Chief of Wungu in the South Mamprussi District. Chief gave as reason that people complained of too much work in Navrongo.

9.3.1933, To Wiassi where I told the people of the decision made at Sandema yesterday that Sandema should be the New Head Chief, after some discussion everyone promised to follow him...

20.12.1933, Chief Anankwen died the beginning of month. Akamba - an old man, elder brother of late chief is acting. He asked for an assistant. Amobil, a young man and younger brother of late chief, was chosen in my presence. Everyone agreed for him.

20/21.2.1934, Akamba the Ag. Chief has done very well. Amobil his assistant 7 days ago died a mysterious death in the bush.

20/21.5.1934, Question of chief still in abeyance. I am now rather in favour of Akamba, the Ag. Chief being appointed by govt. It would be the best wayout unless we are prepared to let the Chiefdom go out of the people ... a family for which there is really no reason.

16.12.1935 (list of chiefs) Wiassi: Chief Abotempo enstooled; died 1937, stool vacant

22.7.1939, Abuntore elected Chief in my presence with Chief of Sandema at Kanjaga to day. He is the nephew of Abolimpo, the late Chief. One other claimant: Ayedana, youngest son of Apasube (died 1926), had 30 votes to Abuntore’s 33. Abazerimi also stood but had no following. Aywenkegli of Ipala Section wished to stand but was ruled out, not being of the chief’s family.

22.7.1939, Election of a Chief [Abunturu] of Wiassi. Nephew of the late Chief obtained three more votes than the next candidate, the brother of former chief and so he was elected. This man, Abunturu has been acting Chief for the last 15 months. (33) There were seven candidates weeded down to three eventually (34) All the Wiassis got together under the new Chief in the market place after the election. I hope they continue like that but it is a difficult village and has a habit of being divided.

9.11.1939, Chief [Abuntore] met me at the Rest House. He is recently elected and is a nice looking chap. .... Everything seems to be going well here under this new Chief who appears to be popular. Wiassi has always been rather a difficult place but then many places were a few years ago which are not now as a result of Indirect Rule and all it has brought in its train.
